SINCE 1952
HISTORY
HISTORIA
The building that houses Walhalla traces its origins back to the 18th century, when part of the defensive system of the Suomenlinna sea fortress was constructed in the area. At that time, the caponier Delwig was built on the site – a military fortification designed to protect the moat and oversee the Kustaanmiekka strait.
In 1947, a decision was made to transfer the caponiers Delwig and Boije to the use of the Ehrensvärd-seura for restaurant operations run by the Finnish Tourist Association. Renovation and conversion work began in 1948 according to the plans of architect Aulis Blomstedt. The premises were completed in 1951 and were used for official hospitality purposes, among others during the 1952 Summer Olympics.
Since then, Walhalla has operated as a popular restaurant and event venue, where history and the surrounding maritime landscape create a unique atmosphere. Carefully restored, the building still preserves the original spirit of the fortress while offering guests the opportunity to enjoy dining in the historic surroundings of Suomenlinna.
The restaurant takes its name from the Valhalla Society, which operated in Suomenlinna in the 1780s and was a secret society of the highest-ranking officers and nobility of its time.
